Our strategic focus

TenneT is building the grid for the generations to come. In this way we fulfil our promise of a brighter energy future.

The customer demand for grid capacity is our starting point. We therefore prioritise closing the gap for delivering this over time.

We achieve this by building the grid faster and utilising the grid better. These are two priorities that work together towards one goal.

To do this, we must deliver together, within TenneT and with our partners. We streamline how we work and we work together to find new solutions to reduce constraints. This is how we move forward and enable society.

TenneT strategic model with focus on delivering together for our customers

Build the grid faster

Delivering more grid capacity for customers

Build the grid faster means delivering more grid capacity for customers, while overcoming barriers that slow us down.

The rapid growth of renewable generation and expected onward growth in electricity demand require rapid build out of the transmission grid.

Target Grid is our vision that shows what we must deliver. It is our plan for onshore and offshore grid infrastructure needed to support a carbon-neutral energy system by 2045.

While TenneT’s annual grid investments have doubled since 2020, a substantial further growth is necessary. And these must fit in a cost-effective and affordable total energy system.

To achieve this, we must build more customer connections and more grid capacity. Next to growing our project execution capacity, this requires addressing constraints in planning and permitting timelines, supply chain capacity and scarcity in the labour market for skilled personnel.

We work together with our customers, national and regional policy makers and supply chain partners to find new solutions to achieve this.

Utilise the grid better

Making optimum use of our existing and growing grid, with improved insights and grid-enhancing technologies, system operations tools and market design

Utilise the grid better means making optimum use of our existing and growing grid, with improved insights and grid-enhancing technologies, system operations tools and market design.

Short term, this includes managing grid congestion. With improved forecasts and real-time insight in the electricity grid, we ensure that the available grid infrastructure can be used optimally. This also requires unlocking flexibility from electricity generators, consumers, and storage systems.

Long term, this means future-proofing the system operations toolbox for the future carbon-neutral electricity system. And it requires updating the market design to enable efficient use of the grid by our customers onshore and offshore, as well as the integrated European electricity market.

And during all of this, a high level of security of supply has to be assured continuously for society.

Deliver together for customers

We focus on our customers, our primary stakeholders.

We focus on our customers - our primary stakeholders. These include DSOs, electricity producers and consumers. Through these customers we serve society and more than 43 million citizens.

We prioritise closing the gap to meeting customer demand for grid capacity, while continuing to ensure security of supply. To achieve this challenging task for the coming decades, we must streamline how we work and find new solutions.

For new solutions we must work together intensively with our customers, partners and stakeholders. For example, in this way we can unlock new flexible customer connections, enable new digital solutions, and accelerate grid infrastructure projects.

Our principles of Ownership, Courage and Connection will continue to guide us in this phase towards 2030.
